Ontario Bans Cell Phones While Driving

According to recent news in and around Ontario, the Ontario Government has decided to finally take action and pass a law that restricts the use of motorists from using their handheld devices while driving. You are now not allowed to talk or text while driving, if you are caught you could face fines of atleast $500, and although unconfirmed, you could receive demerit points. I am trying to find out just exactly what will happen if you are caught, but most places are unsure other than the monetary fine, most are saying no demerit points will be accumulated.

The ban that was introduced yesterday will prohibit anyone from using the following devices while driving a motor vehicle:

  • cell phones, even at a stop light
  • dialing
  • Blackberrys
  • texting
  • hand-held GPS devices

Quebec, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland all have introduced laws to prevent drivers from using any type of device that requires you to take your hands off the wheel while driving. The governments of Manitoba and Prince Edward Island are considering introducing the same type of legislation.

Cellphones have already been banned for drivers in roughlt 50 countries. Some countries that have this law currently in place are Australia, China, France, Kenya and Slovenia.

If you don’t already own a hands free device, it may be time to fork out the cash and go buy one. They can now be picked up for as low as $20, down fromt he $120 not to long ago. Another option is if you have lots of extra cash to spend, why not support one of the auto makers and buy a new vehicle that already has a hand free device built into the vehicle?

I really hope they enforce this law, nothing bothers me more than seeing people talking or texting on their cell phones while driving, if you can’t leave your cell phone alone for the 20mins you are in the car, you really should start seeking professional help.
